Coconut wall panels

Coconut wall panels

These wall panels are made in the Far East from the husk of a coconut shell. Coconut shells are industry by-products and would usually be burned during winter, or simply discarded.

The coconut husk itself is incredibly durable. This is because it contains five times more lignin than bark. Lignin is the stuff in cell walls that fills all the gaps, and just so happens to be one of the slowest decomposing components of dead vegetation.

Making these panels requires craftsmanship and patience, and many local people – who would otherwise be unemployed – are taught these skills by our supplier. Indeed, since the introduction of palm panel products in the European market in 2007, palm panel making has become an industry that employs hundreds of locals. Our supplier only employs people aged 18 or over.

Durable, eco-friendly, sustainable and ethical: it’s no wonder these stunning coconut wall panel are one of MD Matt’s favourite pieces of Café Maia decor.
