ethics: Café Maia doesn’t cost the earth

Named after the Roman goddess of growth and rebirth, Café Maia keeps a green eye on everything: from the fixtures and fittings of the café to staff clothing and disposables. It’s by no means the easiest way to approach business, but it’s certainly rewarding. We’re doing our bit, attempting to change the status quo. And we think that’s the best approach.

Below you’ll find some of many ways we make every Café Maia as eco-friendly as possible. Using everything from the obvious (recycled napkins) to the innovative (coconut walls), we’re committed to creating a modern, fresh look that doesn’t cost the earth.

Counter Display

A showpiece of Café Maia Leeds, this stunning back-lit panel features grasses set in EcoResin. Indeed, the resin is SCS certified as is made from a minimum of 40% pre-consumer recycled content.

Our worktops are bold and beautful, beautiful and made from 40% pre-consumer recycled polymers.
 
             
Eco Products we use  
Coconut Wall Panels

These wall panels are made in the Far East from the husk of a coconut shell. Coconut shells are industry by-products and would usually be burned during winter, or simply discarded.

Recycled Paper

Café Maia stocks unbleached recycled napkins made near Leeds. Shortly after we received our first batch, owners of other catering outlets at Leeds University badgered us for the supplier’s details. Now everyone uses them!
             
Coasters  
Tyre coasters

By recycling tyres instead of burning them, we can avoid a few more toxic marks on our planet. Our recycled tyre coasters avoid horrible coffee marks on our tables, too.

   CD Pencils  
CD pencils

Café Maia pencils are made from recycled CD cases. They’re fantastic quality, although we can’t vouch for the quality of the music that’s gone into them.
             
Basball Caps  
Baseball caps

Café Maia staff wear baseball caps made with a polyester from the non-biodegradable polymer components of plastic bottles.
